Almost all filling stations across the UK have now signed up to the Government’s Fuel Finder tool as drivers attempt to make savings on their petrol and diesel costs.
Fuel Finder launched at the start of the year as the Government sought to help drivers save on fuel by showing them the lowest prices in their local areas.
Despite a difficult start, during which incorrect information was being added to the service, the tool is now being used by thousands of motorists.
Around 97 per cent of UK petrol stations are registered with the scheme, accounting for an estimated 99 per cent of all fuel sold across the country.
Forecourts across the UK are required to report prices and the unavailability of fuel within 30 minutes of a change.
Estimates from the Government suggest that drivers using the Fuel Finder service could save between one and six pence per litre.
Fresh analysis from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) states that the “overwhelming majority” of forecourts have recorded a price update within the last week.
It acknowledged that some forecourts are not changing prices as frequently, which could be down to a lack of price changes.
Smaller and more rural forecourts tend to change their prices less frequently than others because they sell lower volumes than major retailers.
A grace period ended at the end of April to ensure retailers are registered with the Fuel Finder scheme.
Since then, the CMA has sent 1,166 letters to retailers and issued compliance notices in respect of 53 sites, with many of these resolving any issues quickly.
The CMA can impose financial penalties on any forecourt failing to adhere to the terms of the Fuel Finder, including not reporting prices properly.

This was echoed by VE3, which manages the Fuel Finder, reporting that it had not referred any suspected cases of non-compliance with the CMA.
Sarah Cardell, chief executive of the CMA, encouraged motorists to use the Fuel Finder tool to save them money as prices remain high.
“The more motorists make use of Fuel Finder-backed services, the better it works – saving money now and driving down prices in the long run,” Ms Cardell added.
