Siren sounds blared from mobile phones across England without warning this evening as part of Britain’s national emergency alert system.

At around 7pm, a “severe alert” was issued by the UK Government, ordering the public not to light anything that could spark a fire, including disposable barbecues which have been temporarily banned by Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
