Mason Greenwood and former Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi have both received bans from European football after a fierce brawl in their Champions League qualification match between Fenerbahce and Lyon.

Greenwood, who joined the Turkish club from Marseille during the summer, received a one-game ban for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

His suspension carries a one-year probationary period, meaning it will only be activated if he commits a further offence during that time.

Greenwood was among several individuals punished by European football’s governing body following a brawl that broke out at full-time, after Fenerbahce progressed to the league stage.

His teammate Guendouzi faced considerably stiffer punishment, receiving a four-match European suspension, two of which are suspended, along with a €50,000 (£43,000) fine.

The former Arsenal midfielder was punished for “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

Guendouzi, who spent three years at Marseille before his move to Fenerbahce, was subjected to persistent jeering from Lyon supporters throughout the match, given the deep animosity between the two French clubs.

After the final whistle, he appeared to goad sections of the home fans, prompting teammates to try to steer him away as tensions escalated.

He was also captured on camera shouting “Allez l’OM”, a reference to his former club, towards pitchside broadcasters.

Lyon’s goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira received the fierce individual sanction, with Uefa handing him a five-match ban, two of those suspended, after finding him guilty of “serious assault” during the post-match clashes.

Footage shared on social media appeared to show a person in a Lyon kit confronting Guendouzi as he headed for the tunnel, with security personnel and staff from both sides quickly becoming embroiled in the altercation.

A wider confrontation then spilt into the tunnel area.

Both Fenerbahce and Lyon were each fined €50,000 (£43,000) after their respective squads were deemed to have violated general standards of conduct.

Guendouzi spoke to reporters after the match, saying he had been “disrespected” by the home supporters.

He said: “If we can’t celebrate the way we want afterwards, I find that disappointing.

Guendouzi said he was 'disrespected' by Lyon supporters

“When you have 60,000 people insulting your family, your mother, your children, even before the game and no-one on the referee’s side tells the crowd to be quiet.”

He also expressed frustration that match officials had not intervened to address the behaviour from the stands.

“I know that in France, when this kind of thing happens, there comes a point where they’ll talk to the fans to stop and maybe stop the match,” he added.
