Major car brand could U-turn on plans to sell vehicles in the UK amid 'rapidly evolving market'

A popular American car brand is reconsidering its decision to relaunch in the UK, according to fresh reports.

General Motors has placed its plan to relaunch Cadillac in the UK under review due to uncertain market conditions.

Autocar has reported that General Motors is assessing whether to press ahead with a wider launch in the UK after stating last year that the brand would return “soon”.

CEO of GM Europe Pere Brugal said Cadillac would re-enter the UK market with the Lyriq, adding that a launch was “coming soon”.

Despite this, the company has yet to announce when it will fully launch in the UK, potentially putting the move in jeopardy.

Only one dealership has been set up for right-hand-drive, namely Charles Hurst in Dublin, offering the Lyriq, Optiq and Vistiq models.

A spokesperson for General Motors told Autocar that the “UK market and EV landscape continues to evolve rapidly”, especially with new brands becoming more popular.

They added: “We are actively reviewing our future Cadillac plans to ensure they remain aligned with market conditions and customer demand, and we will continue to assess future opportunities accordingly.”

Motorists are able to get their hands on left-hand-drive Cadillacs imported from the United States through the Clive Sutton dealership in London.

Clive Sutton confirmed earlier this year that GM Specialty Vehicles would be selling the Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade-V models.

This is in addition to the GMC Yukon Denali, Sierra 1500 Denali, Sierra 1500 AT4, as well as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado.

Commenting at the time, Jean-Pierre Diernaz, managing director of GM Europe, said: “We’re excited to be working with Clive Sutton to bring to UK customers our iconic North American vehicles.

“We’ve selected incredible vehicles from our global brands – Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet – through a dedicated GM facility in North West London and the nationwide network of retailers that is set to follow.”

Clive Sutton said the launch of GM Specialty Vehicle was an “exciting moment” for motorists who have had to admire GM’s lineup of vehicles from afar.

The GM vehicles available through Clive Sutton have full UK homologation, with the dealership also dealing with imports, taxation and other requirements.

Mr Sutton said: “We are delighted to be the first GM Specialty Vehicles franchise in the UK and to lead development of the nationwide network.”
