M60 chaos: Drivers face miles of traffic delays amid 'police-led incident' on busy motorway

Drivers are facing long delays in the North West of England this morning as the police conduct an investigation on the M60.

The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed between J10 (Trafford Park) and J11 (Eccles) clockwise due to a Greater Manchester Police-led incident.

Just before the peak of rush hour, at around 7.30am, traffic officers from National Highways were called to the M60 to assist with the incident.

The clockwise route remains closed while police investigations and vehicle recovery are carried out.

It has warned that it is currently unknown when the carriageway will reopen, potentially leaving thousands of drivers stuck in traffic.

Traffic caught within the closure has been released past the scene, with National Highways also creating a diversion route for motorists.

Drivers are currently dealing with delays of around 40 minutes, and approximately four miles of congestion on the approach.

Traffic continues to build on the M60 motorway this morning

Traffic cameras show delays building on the M60 past J10 and J11 near the Trafford Centre, as motorists face further rush hour havoc.

Images posted by road users from the scene appear to show two police cars blocking the carriageway, as well as cones on the road.

One X user warned: “Not a great start to the day. If you travel North on M60 toward Worsley, avoid. Could be here a while I think.”

Drivers around Manchester are facing traffic chaos this morning

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson has told GB News that it is “currently dealing with a concern for welfare incident”.

National Highways warned: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

The transport organisation has also installed a diversion route for motorists looking to avoid the incident this morning.

  • Leave the M60 clockwise at J9
  • At the M60 J9/B5158 Lostock Circle Roundabout, take the third exit and follow the A5081 northbound for 1.8 km
  • At the A5081/B5214 Parkway Circle Roundabout, take the second exit and follow the A576 northbound for 0.8 km
  • At the A576/Moonings Road Tenax Circle Roundabout, take the first exit and follow the A576 westbound for 0.2 km
  • At the A576/Guinness Road Guinness Circle Roundabout, take the third exit and follow the A576 northbound for 0.6 km
  • At the A576/Coronet Way Centenary Circle Roundabout, take the first exit and follow the A576 westbound for 0.3 km
  • At the A576/Lankro Way Canal Circle Roundabout, take the second exit and follow the A576 northbound for 0.6 km
  • At the A576/M602 J2 Gilda Brook Roundabout, take the first exit and follow the M602 westbound for 2.7 km
  • Rejoin the M60 at J11
