M6 chaos: Drivers face at least 100 minutes of delays after massive lorry fire shuts major motorway

Drivers are being warned of long delays and miles of congestion following a huge lorry fire on the M6 during rush hour this morning.

The M6 is closed between J18 (Middlewich) and J19 (Knutsford) due to a fire involving a heavy goods vehicle.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are currently in attendance and dealing with the incident, which is starting to cause long delays.

National Highways first alerted drivers to the incident shortly after 8am, as thousands of drivers use the motorway to travel to work.

The northbound carriageway remains closed after the fire, while the transport organisation confirmed that the southbound had been reopened.

Despite this, drivers on the southbound carriageway are still facing delays of around 15 minutes and two miles of congestion.

However, motorists heading north are facing around six miles of congestion and a staggering delay of 100 minutes.

Three fire engines have been deployed to the scene from Middlewich, Northwich and Lymm, according to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

In a statement, the force said: “Firefighters are currently in attendance at an incident involving a heavy goods vehicle that is well alight on the M6 North, between junctions 18 and 19.”
