M25 traffic: Drivers face miles of congestion as air ambulance lands on busy motorway

Drivers are being warned of long delays on the M25 this afternoon following an accident, which prompted a response from the emergency services.

Motorists are facing around four miles of congestion on the M25 clockwise near Leatherhead between J9 and J10.

This follows the recovery of a broken-down HGV following an accident, with National Highways warning of 70 minutes of delays.

An update from traffic monitoring site Inrix states that long delays were still to be expected between J9 A243 (Leatherhead) and J10 A3 (Wisley).

It stated that an air ambulance had landed on the motorway to attend an accident on the opposite side, with “severe delays” being reported.

The accident was first reported at around 2pm, while the broken-down lorry had led to further delays on the opposite carriageway.

Posting on social media, National Highways stated: “Lanes 3 & 4 (of 4) are closed on M25 clockwise near Leatherhead between J9 & J10 for the recovery of a broken-down HGV.

“Traffic Officers implemented emergency traffic management to support recovery operation.

“Current delays of 100 mins and five miles of congestion on the approach.”

Congestion remains on the M25, with traffic on the approach to J9 expected to remain until J8 for Reigate.
