King Charles travelled to the Scottish Highland town of Dingwall today to celebrate a remarkable eight centuries since it was first bestowed Royal Burgh status by King Alexander II.
The monarch received an enthusiastic reception from residents as he arrived at the town hall, where the community had gathered to mark the historic occasion.
Dingwall has been hosting a year-long programme of events throughout 2026 under the banner “Dingwall 800,” marking this once-in-a-generation milestone.
The visit followed shortly after the reopening of the Hector Macdonald memorial tower on Mitchell Hill, which came after a campaign spanning more than a decade.

During his visit, the King engaged with local volunteers, community organisations, businesses, young people and emergency services personnel from across Ross-shire, gaining a vivid sense of the area’s enduring civic pride.
He also recognised outstanding Highland enterprise by meeting recipients of The King’s Award for Enterprise, among them RSE, WoodBlocX and Fresh Marketing.
Throughout his trip, he clutched onto an umbrella as he braved the wet and gusty Highlands conditions.
In a particularly significant moment, the monarch bestowed the King’s Award for Voluntary Service upon two local organisations – the Evanton Wood Community Company and Highland and Islands Blood Bikes – honouring their exceptional dedication to serving their communities.
A commemorative plaque celebrating Dingwall’s 800th anniversary was unveiled inside the town hall, providing a lasting tribute to the occasion.
Cultural performances added a distinctly Highland flavour to the proceedings, with the Highland Young Musicians and traditional harp player Grace Stewart-Skinner among those chosen to showcase the town’s rich artistic heritage.

The performances highlighted the breadth of talent flourishing in the Ross-shire community, spanning both classical and traditional disciplines.
Joanie Whiteford, the Lord-Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty, praised the day’s events, saying: “The strength of community spirit and the remarkable creativity and talent on display have made this a truly memorable occasion.”
She added: “From our musicians and dancers to our volunteers, businesses and community champions, everyone involved has done Dingwall proud.”
Councillor Margaret Paterson hailed the royal visit as “a truly proud moment” for the town, noting: “His Majesty’s visit has undoubtedly been one of the highlights of this very special year.”
She said the anniversary celebrations had offered a chance to honour Dingwall’s past whilst looking confidently towards its future.
