'I'm a GP - a refreshingly simple bedtime habit could be the key to tackling high blood pressure'

A leading GP has cautioned that sleep quality deserves far greater attention as a risk factor for elevated blood pressure, warning that too many people overlook it while concentrating on other lifestyle changes.

Dr Saira Bano, GP, Obesity Specialist and Co-Founder of SwiftDoctor, told GB News: “It’s an important blood pressure risk factor. If you’re focusing on your salt intake or exercise or cutting smoking, then you should also be thinking about your sleep.”

Her remarks highlight a growing recognition within the medical profession that the nation’s sleep habits may be quietly undermining cardiovascular health, even among those who believe they are doing everything right.

During a healthy night’s rest, blood pressure naturally falls, affording the heart and blood vessels a vital window of recovery.

BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK

However, when sleep is consistently disrupted — whether through poor habits or conditions such as sleep apnoea — that crucial overnight dip can diminish or vanish entirely.

Dr Bano explained: “Over time, that can contribute to higher blood pressure readings and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.”

She was careful to note that the occasional restless night is unlikely to cause lasting harm. The real danger lies in a sustained pattern of inadequate sleep, which can gradually drive blood pressure upwards.

Asked which single evening habit she would recommend patients address first, Dr Bano’s answer was straightforward.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“It’s probably the most boring one, which is having a consistent bedtime to make sure you’re actually getting enough good-quality sleep,” she said.

“It’s one of the most effective changes you can make because it supports the body’s natural rhythm and can improve several areas linked to blood pressure at the same time.”

The advice may lack the glamour of more fashionable wellness trends, but its simplicity is precisely the point. By anchoring the body’s internal clock to a regular schedule, a fixed bedtime bolsters multiple physiological processes simultaneously.

Dr Bano also explained why what we do before bed carries particular physiological weight.

The body is engineered to wind down gradually as evening progresses, with hormonal shifts, a slowing heart rate and falling blood pressure all preparing it for restorative sleep.

SLEEPING HUMAN

Habits that disrupt this process — consuming large meals late at night, exposing oneself to bright screens, or maintaining an irregular routine — can keep the body in a heightened state of alertness.

When such disruptions become habitual, the normal nocturnal reduction in blood pressure is prevented. Over time, this contributes to persistently elevated readings, compounding the cardiovascular risks Dr Bano outlined.
