Hilary Clinton has blasted Donald Trump’s White House by comparing it to Saddam Hussein’s palaces.
The former First Lady launched a sneering attack against her 2016 election rival, calling him a “loser” and describing his decor as “insane”.

“When I was in Baghdad after the fall of Saddam Hussein I had meetings in some of his palaces and they were quite reminiscent of what we are seeing in our own White House,” she said.
As former First Lady, Mrs Clinton oversaw renovations to the White House’s Blue Room, introducing “sapphire blue fabric” to the draperies and furniture coverings, also adding decorative light gold paper to the walls.

But she has sharply criticised Mr Trumps changes to the White House, saying he was “destroying” the property after the East Wing was demolished to construct a ballroom – refurbishments which have now been halted by a federal appeals court judge.
“It’s sad to me. It’s sad that it’s so tackied up and it is a reflection of his narcissistic personality and his need to feel important, including sticking gold embellishments all over the walls of the Oval Office,” she told the Pivot podcast.
She added: “This is a man who his mind apparently goes to where can I add more gold instead of how do I get out of Iran without looking like the loser that I am.”
Mrs Clinton said the next Commander-in-Chief would have to make a “big decision” over Mr Trump’s refurbishments.
“What do you do with a half-finished ballroom?” she said.
Hitting back at the former Secretary of State, White House spokesman Davis Ingle pointed to the heated 2016 election, which Mr Trump won by 304 electoral votes to Mrs Clinton’s 227.
“Hillary Clinton never had the opportunity to decorate the Oval Office as President because she suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of President Trump, which she has never recovered from,” he told CNN.
Despite her attack, the former First Lady admitted she was not against the “idea of a ballroom” but slammed Mr Trump’s renovation as an unfortunate-looking “carbuncle on the side of the White House”.

The President has undergone a large-scale “beautification” project in the White House and throughout Washington DC since returning to the White House in 2025.
Gold detailing has been added to the surfaces of the Oval Office and in the West Wing and he has commissioned projects such as the Triumphal Arch and a problem-ridden refurbishment of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
After the White House dropped vandalism charges against former Olympian David Hearn, Mr Trump criticised the US Attorney responsible, Jeanine Pirro, saying she “choked” and had “folded like an umbrella”.
The Reflecting Pool is not the only setback the President has faced in his beautification projects – Mr Trump was also forced to remove his name from DC performing arts venue the Kennedy Center.
Mrs Clinton joked she would be willing to take on the role of “Secretary of Taking Down the Gold” after Mr Trump leaves office and take responsibility for “fixing up” Washington DC.
The former New York Senator also spoke about the changing nature of the Democratic Party after the primary victory of Democratic Socialist-aligned Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.
The Michigan Senate candidate’s campaign made “really nasty personal attacks” against rival Haley Stevens, according to Mrs Clinton, who warned that Democratic unity should not be a “one-way street”.
On Tuesday, six states, notably Wisconsin, held primaries – as self-described democratic socialist Francesca Hong seeks to enter the governor’s office.
