A GP manager who stole more than £500,000 from an NHS surgery to fund a lavish lifestyle has avoided jail after a judge warned Britain’s prisons are “full to bursting”.
Helena Paiva, 33, admitted stealing £517,260.29 from the Albion Street Practice in Southwark, south London, between January 2023 and July 2025.
Southwark Crown Court heard that Paiva splashed the stolen cash on a Tesla, designer clothing, luxury handbags and thousands of pounds worth of Amazon orders.
But despite the scale of the fraud, Judge Christopher Hehir handed her a three-year prison sentence suspended for three years.

The judge cited Britain’s overcrowded prisons as one of the factors in his decision, telling the court that jails were “full to bursting”.
Paiva began stealing just months after being hired as the practice manager.
Prosecutor Hannah Williams said she manipulated the surgery’s financial statements and bookkeeping records to funnel money into her own account.
The 33-year-old disguised the transfers as misspelt versions of legitimate outgoings, including changing one entry to “HRMC”, while leaving the sort code and account number unchanged.
“The edits were not immediately obvious,” Ms Williams told the court.
Paiva spent almost £10,000 on Amazon alone, buying items including vapes and car accessories.
When police raided her home in Boxley, Kent, they discovered boxes containing goods from Hermès, Christian Dior and Selfridges alongside jewellery and luxury handbags.
One handbag was delivered to the property while police officers were still carrying out their search.

Former colleagues confronted Paiva in court, describing her as a “conniving, scheming liar” who had left them feeling “stabbed in the back”.
GP Louisa Dove told her: “Helena, you stole from and lied to each one of us. You are a liar and a thief.”
Dr Dove said the practice was not a faceless organisation but a group of eight people whose families depended on its income.
She said: “You stole from the NHS, deprived the practice of extra services, because part of the money stolen was paid to doctors doing overtime.
“You put our NHS GP practice at risk of closure.”
Judge Hehir rejected suggestions that trauma in Paiva’s past explained or excused her offending and said greed had driven the fraud.
He described her as a “capable and intelligent woman” who had been “something of a high achiever” before stealing from those who trusted her.
The judge also took into account Paiva’s two children, aged 12 and four, when deciding against immediate custody.
Alongside the suspended sentence, Paiva was ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activities and 160 hours of unpaid community work.
As Paiva sobbed in the dock, Judge Hehir warned her: “You have come within a hair’s breadth of going down to the cells.”
Only around £7,000 of the £517,260.29 stolen has so far been recovered, with a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing scheduled for February 10 next year.
