In today’s GB News Daily Reflection, we examine how Jesus Christ invites people to pursue truth with compassion and justice with mercy, treating others as we would like them to treat us.
“We live in a very divided and fragmented world. Opinions are divided. Relationships break down, famous families feud, nations wage wars. People rage. Our culture actually rewards outrage, quick judgements and instant reactions. Social media makes it easy to comment before we understand something, to label, before we listen, and to cancel before we converse. When someone disappoints us, we often have two instincts fight or flight. We either avoid the conversation altogether, letting resentment and bitterness quietly grow, or we broadcast the conflict, inviting others to take sides.
“Today’s culture tells us that it is okay to actively turn against others, whether that’s those who are different from us, or those who have hurt us, or simply those who have a different opinion. To us, that’s cancel culture.
“In Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 18, Jesus offers a surprisingly practical alternative. He says that if someone has wronged you, your first step is simply to go and talk to them privately. Not to shame them. Not to win an argument. Not to gather supporters. The goal is to restore the relationship.
“That advice feels revolutionary today. Jesus points us towards something different. That doesn’t mean that we pretend that there is no harm or that wrongdoing doesn’t matter. Jesus acknowledges that people do hurt one another, but he refuses to let conflict have the final word.”
