In today’s GB News Daily Reflection, we remember that if God can bridge the gap between heaven and earth, then we can certainly bridge the gaps between each other.

“Mary Lathrop wrote the poem Judge Softly, in which she coined the phrase to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. Today, it’s often quoted as the definition of empathy.

“Empathy is to put yourself in someone else’s position to walk a mile in their shoes. Empathy is trying to understand another’s perspective or circumstances, especially before judging or criticising.

“For Christians, empathy begins with the amazing idea that God became human. God became one of us. Jesus was born, grew up, lived, and died as an ordinary person. That’s far more than walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. And God’s empathy for us meant Jesus became one of us and died for our sake.

“So later on, Christians would write things like rejoice with those who rejoice. Mourn with those who mourn. If God empathises with us, we should empathise with others. In our polarised world, it can seem impossible to have empathy with those who are very different from us.”
