In today’s GB News Daily Reflection, we remember how Jesus offers a wiser way in ordinary day to day conflict, he says, before going to others to air your grievances about someone.
“Most of us know how quickly a disagreement can blow up. A careless remark, an unwise email, a perceived slight and before long others are involved. Sides are being taken and it’s far bigger than it needed to be. It’s tiring, isn’t it?
“Go and speak to the person themselves. Try to resolve it directly. Listen well. Speak humbly, and rather than trying to win the argument, try to win the person. Let the goal be getting back on good terms, clearing the air. And that may mean being prepared to forgive rather than get your own back. But that’s not because Jesus doesn’t take wrongdoing seriously. He does. It’s not because he was never seriously wronged himself.
“He was, but because of the beauty and goodness, are being willing to absorb the cost of someone’s offence against you rather than making them pay for it. How different are world might be? How different our own lives might be if we were quicker to seek peace. Jesus said, blessed are the peacemakers. In this, as in all things, Jesus practiced what he preached. He came into the world not to condemn the world, but to save the world. John 317.
“We are the ones who truly have wronged God, yet he moved towards us. And at the cross he absorbed the cost of our wrongdoing and offered forgiveness. Offers forgiveness. That is where peacemaking begins. Not with striving to do better, but with receiving the forgiveness that is offered to us.”
