Four killed after plane plunges into water off Alaska coast

Four people were killed after a small plane plunged into the waters off the coast of Alaska.

A Piper PA-24-260 crashed at 1.15pm shortly after takeoff from an airport in the remote coastal town of Seldovia, according to Clint Johnson, the National Transportation Safety Board’s Alaska region chief.

Seldovia is around 136 miles southwest of Anchorage, the capital of Alaska.

The small craft was submerged in some 15 feet of water in the Seldovia Slough near the shore.

Emergency responders struggle to reach the plane in the frigid water, which can reach temperatures as low as 3 C, Mr Johnson added.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
