Donald Trump has unveiled a United States Space Force uniform that has been compared to characters from the beloved Star Wars film series.

The US President has sparked debate on social media after unveiling what he described as a “next-generation” uniform concept for the US Space Force.

Mr Trump shared the graphic on Sunday depicting a sleek, charcoal-coloured design that quickly drew comparisons to costumes worn by villains in science fiction films.

Film buffs were swift to point out the resemblance to the Imperial Forces in Star Wars, with the dark, militaristic aesthetic.

The post sparked a wave of responses questioning whether the design’s ominous appearance was perhaps a little too fitting.

The proposed uniform features a collared jacket and trousers in dark charcoal, paired with black boots, a black belt and a matching cap.

The Space Force Delta emblem appears prominently on the collar, sleeve patch, belt buckle and cap front.

According to the accompanying graphic, the design draws on “the discipline and functionality of the Starship Trooper uniform” and has been “modernised for the guardians of the space domain.”

The 1997 film Starship Troopers was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who spent his childhood in Nazi-occupied Netherlands.

The satirical space epic depicts a future Earth ruled by a fascist government engaged in an interstellar conflict against enormous alien insects.

While some users seized on the Starship Troopers connection, many others drew parallels with different cinematic universes.

Healthcare advocate Melanie D’Arrigo posed the question on X: “Designing the Space Force uniforms to look like the evil bad guys from Star Wars, who are led by an elderly, power-hungry tyrant, who lose repeatedly, is a bit too on brand, no?”

Military history writer ChrisO_wiki responded with a clip from the 1987 comedy Spaceballs, adding: “Ah yes, I see the source of inspiration for this uniform.”

Menswear commentator Derek Guy said: “This is the kind of design costume designers make to tell you who are the bad guys in a space movie.”

Christian broadcaster Erick Erickson described the uniforms as “a cross between Star Trek in the symbols and Imperial Forces from Star Wars.”

Self-described “conservative critic” Jennifer Zilla stressed that she was “entirely on board with Space Force and the new Space Academy coming and everything we’re doing in space and President Trump.”

Nevertheless, she conceded the design was “the uniform of the Imperial Army from Star Wars.”

“Aka the people Darth Vader works for. Emperor Palpatine’s people. I’m not saying don’t use it I’m just pointing out that’s what it is,” she wrote.

It is unclear whether President Trump genuinely intends to overhaul Space Force attire.

Star Wars is now a massive, multi-billion-dollar epic space-opera media franchise created by George Lucas in 1977.
