Ben Shelton paid an emotional tribute to the American supporters who stayed inside Arthur Ashe Stadium until after 3am to help him dump defending champion Carlos Alcaraz out of the US Open.
The home favourite claimed one of the finest victories of his career by defeating the eight-time Grand Slam champion 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) in an extraordinary quarter-final.
Shelton finally completed the upset at 3.33am local time, setting a new record for the latest finish in US Open history.
The 23-year-old then credited the relentless noise from the New York crowd, including chants of “USA”, with carrying him over the line after four hours and 28 minutes of absorbing tennis.
