Asda shoppers to see major change as digital price tags arrive in 500 stores

Asda has rolled out electronic shelf edge labels across its entire convenience store network, with more than 1.2 million digital displays now in place at all 517 Asda Express locations.

The supermarket chain worked alongside technology provider Vusion and its partners Renovotec and HL Display to complete the installation programme.

The digital labels eliminate the need for staff to manually swap out more than 120,000 paper price tickets every week, a huge operational burden for the retailer’s small-format stores.

This is great news for Britons who want to know more about the foods they are purchasing. The labels give ingredient and allergen information on items including bakery products, helping them to make better-informed purchasing decisions.

The digital screens show pricing, unit costs, weight and promotional details more clearly than paper versions, and come as part of Asda’s wider push to make stores more modern.

With paper tickets removed from shelves, store colleagues can now spend more time serving customers, improving product availability.

The upgraded displays use Vusion’s latest 2.6-inch screen technology, which offers improved readability for both employees and customers browsing the aisles.

Director of Asda Express central operations, Matt Harrison, said: “Completing the rollout of electronic shelf edge labels across our entire Express estate is a major milestone.

“By removing manual pricing tasks, we’re freeing up time for colleagues to focus on serving customers and keeping store standards high. It’s another example of how we’re modernising our stores to improve the shopping experience for customers.”

UK&I CEO at Vusion, Roy Horgan, added: “We are proud to have reached this milestone with Asda, and we look forward to continuing our partnership, building on this strong foundation to further improve the in-store experience for all.”

This comes as Asda tests new cameras that should keep shelves better stocked. This is being trialled at five of its larger main estate stores.

The camera system scans shelves to find gaps, out-of-stock items, low inventory levels and products that are in the wrong place.

Staff then receive an alert that helps them get products back on shelves more quickly, making a better experience for shoppers.

In more food news, Asda will overhaul the biscuit aisle with 20 new lines — including the return of a nostalgic 90s treat.
