Andy Burnham has been urged to launch an inquiry into illegal migration after 10,000 Britons signed a petition calling for a national probe.

The petition, which was published on July 15, received thousands of signatures just days after mega-dinghies were snapped crossing the Channel.

The Labour Government will now need to directly respond to calls for a national inquiry, with MPs only having the opportunity to hold a Westminster Hall debate if the petition exceeds 100,000 signatures.

“We call on the Government to launch a full-scale public inquiry into illegal migration in the UK,” the petition’s creator wrote in its description.

“The inquiry should investigate the effectiveness of UK border control, the financial cost on taxpayers, and the deportation system.

“Thousands of people illegally migrate to the UK each year.

“We believe this has negatively impacted the UK to a significant extent and resulted in some people feeling unsafe walking the streets.

“Furthermore, we believe it has brought a great burden onto taxpayers as the Government has had to pay for more support for illegal migrants.”
